Mission in the Kyiv region, Part II

Date

In villages like Komarivka, where there are no bomb shelters, people are forced to use basements to protect themselves from shelling. Since the beginning of the war, children have spent many nights in cold and dark basements, hiding during air attacks.

Many families live in the northern part of the Kyiv region, where the combat started after Russian invaders crossed the border of Belarus. People only came out of the basement for brief periods of time during the daylight to get water from the well and cook food on a firewood-heated stove. “We had no water and electricity. All of us were gathering firewood around the house, making a fireplace, cooking on it, and warming ourselves. It was freezing in the basement”, said the woman, who took care of her family and lived in dangerous and terrible conditions.

Even on the 100th day of the war, there were reports of fighting or air strikes across Ukraine. According to the UN, 3778 people had been killed and 4186 were wounded in Ukraine. There were 7,564 civilian casualties since February 24. The statistic includes 183 children who died and 215 children who were injured. The real numbers are probably much higher.

The World Health Organization has also reported 235 attacks on medical facilities, which killed at least 75 people.
